It's not Triton...It's the new AIM6 ;)

Hi All,

I'm obviously behind on all this blogging mayhem but it's due to just cause, getting the new AIM6 out the door. It's actually the first release that I can actually say I'm proud of. Oh yea, and AIM 5.9, that's not on my pc anymore ;)

Features:

1) Offline IM's - You can't run away from your significant other anymore people, they'll be sending you IM's without you online. And when you get on, SURPRISE, you have an IM waiting to be read. (Nostalgic memories of getting paged from friends and not being able to deny it...hehe)

2) IM Logging - Yup, IM logging is finally in and legit. No more trying to find that logger we snuck in about a year ago. Gotta love calling people out on stuff they said the night before ;)

3) Expanded Buddy List - You want 1,000 buddies? Go for it 'cuz the buddy list supports it. Let's be honest, you only have that many buddies because you're using the same screenname from 8 years ago ;) J/K

4) New Away - Away messages make more sense now. You wanna manage them, select manage...want a new one, select new (hmmm...why does it look a lot like the old one...?) BECAUSE IT GOT THE JOB DONE! ;)

5) UI - The UI has been completely redone and worthy of using. Some of the color choices may make you cringe, but it's well worth the download. Everything from color to positioning has changed. Even video, file transfer, and images have been reworked from a UI perspective. Much more usable and inviting to use. Try dragging and dropping a pic onto a conversation, you may start using it more often ;)

6) I could go on...but I'll let you see it for yourself. Try the new AIM6 from www.aim.com. You may just replace your current AIM client with it..I know I did. ;)

Out with Triton - In with the new AIM6.

Happy AIMing and Happy Holidays!

Hi,

I'm loving the new AIM 6.0, except for one thing. None of the expressions stuff (icons, smilies, etc) will display for me. They just show up as a red X. My buddies can see them, though, so I'm assuming I'm missing some bit of software or something. I know this probably isn't the best place to post about it, but I haven't gotten anywhere on the aim site, and I was hoping you could point me in the right direction for information about this. Thanks for you time! -ajollyllama

Whoops, I forgot contact info other than my screen name. Here's my email: ldrcsc@gmail.com

Sorry for the late response...holiday hit me and I forgot that this was actually posted.

The only time I've seen something like this happen was when someone tried changing a smiley or some other expression and the expression actually never completely downloaded. The solution is typically to try setting the smiley again (even though the website makes it seem like you already have), and let it apply uninterrupted.

Hope that helps :)

Hi there :)

I randomly found this thread through a google search but with the newest version of aim do you just lose any of the buddy comments? I keep useful links there and I can't seem to acess them since I updated!

Thanks!!

Listen, we REALLY need a new client for Mac OS X. It's so stupid for AOL to abandon the Macintosh platform, especially since it's growing more now than it ever has before.

iChat is a great program, but it's not AOL Instant Messenger. Users that are switchers, or people like me who have been faithfully using AIM 4.7 for the past 3 years, aren't going to want to learn how to use iChat. A switcher is going to look for the exact application they used for Windows, only the Mac version... they're going to want a native Mac OS X build from AIM, and that's exactly what AOL needs to author.

Please... take into consideration the fact that you've abandoned a quickly growing market. iChat is never going to be 100% feature-compatible with AIM anyway, so just release a Mac client already. Please.

Hi Steve,

First off, thanks for supporting AIM as much as you do; your posting is a testament to your enthusiasm.

And trust me, we developers KNOW that we need a MAC client out there, in fact, we want one, but, as everyone knows, AOL kind of took a setback. Tides are changing.

In house, we've been making moves to expand our base outside the Window architecture, more specifically, towards the ever-so embraced Mac. I can't really talk about some of the proprietary technologies our foundation is dependent on, but rest assured that the developers on them have some hefty Macs in their cube and they are, too, seeing the need.

Long story short, WE'LL have one, in due time. Remember, the new UI in AIM6 vs. that of AIM 5.9, is built on in house technology that is made from scratch...and of course, it started towards a Microsofty direction.

Oh yea, love your thoughts on Vista. I'm actually going to install that bad boy on my personal home machine this weekend since the drivers on my box are supposedly already recognized. And, just like you, I may have to shut myself away for a few nights and re-asYouSaid-tinker my settings to fit my character ;)

Once again, thanks Steve.

Happy AIMing.
